Advancing Community Well-Being

Our Values

This work is grounded in a simple belief: lasting change begins with people and grows through organizations and communities that are committed to learning, collaboration, and recovery. Every individual deserves the opportunity to thrive, every organization has the potential to improve, and every community can build systems that promote health, resilience, and hope. Our work exists to help turn that belief into meaningful action through practical guidance, strategic leadership, and a commitment to creating sustainable change.

My approach to this work has been shaped by both personal and professional experience. As a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, I value respect, responsibility, community, ecological relationships and the understanding that lasting change is built through relationships, trust, and shared purpose. These values, together with my lived recovery experience and years of leadership in behavioral health, public health, and recovery systems, guide how I serve individuals, organizations, and communities.

While my work is informed by my heritage, it is not intended to represent the Choctaw Nation or Indigenous communities broadly. Rather, it reflects my own journey, my professional experience, and my commitment to helping others create meaningful, sustainable change.

Our Team

Patrick Dunn MA, MPH, DrPH Candidate Mailman School of Public Health Columbia University

My work has always been driven by a desire to understand how people, relationships, and communities create the conditions for health, healing, and lasting change. For more than four decades, I have worked across behavioral health, substance use recovery, nonprofit leadership, and public health, helping individuals, organizations, and communities respond to complex challenges with practical, sustainable solutions. Along the way, I have organized with communities around public health issues including HIV/AIDS, mental health, sexual health, suicide prevention, and substance use, bringing together diverse voices to strengthen local responses, reduce stigma, and expand opportunities for health and recovery.

My professional journey has been shaped by both experience and scholarship. I earned a master's degree in Social Ecology from the Institute for Social Ecology, where I explored the relationship between people, communities, and the systems that shape everyday life. I later earned a Master of Public Health from Columbia University and continue that work as a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) candidate in Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia. Together, these experiences have reinforced my belief that meaningful change happens when we understand health as something created not only in healthcare settings, but in neighborhoods, relationships, institutions, and the environments where people live their lives.

Equally important is the perspective I bring through lived experience. Long-term recovery has taught me that every person carries a story that deserves to be heard and that lasting change begins with genuine human connection. As a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma living outside of Oklahoma, I understand identity as a lifelong relationship rather than a fixed place. My heritage strengthens my connection to history, culture, and responsibility that continues to shape how I approach this work. I am comfortable working at the intersections, between communities, professions, lived experience, and systems of care, helping people find common ground while respecting the differences that make every community unique. I do not seek to speak for any one community; instead, I strive to listen deeply, build understanding, and help create the conditions where collaboration can flourish.

Whether I am working with an individual pursuing recovery, advising organizational leaders, or helping communities respond to emerging public health challenges, I bring together lived experience, academic inquiry, professional leadership, and a deep respect for the wisdom that exists within every community. My role is not to provide all the answers, but to help people and organizations discover solutions that are thoughtful, practical, and capable of creating lasting impact.
